The Griffith Institute for Tourism (GIFT) Climate Change Action cluster has in October 2024 announced a new research project titled Climate Justice and Tourism.
This initiative has been led by Dr. Raymond Rastegar (Department of Tourism, Sport and Hotel Management, Griffith University, to explore the intersection of climate justice and tourism.
This project is driven by the need to embed justice within climate policy and actions to ensure that climate change impacts and initiatives do not perpetuate historical and ongoing social and environmental vulnerabilities.
It explores the complex relationship between climate change, climate justice, and tourism by shedding light on context-specific justice challenges within climate policies and practices relevant to tourism. Typically economic factors dominate policymaking for tourism. But this approach risks overlooking local contexts and sidelining essential social, cultural, and political considerations.
The ultimate aim of this avenue of research is to integrate justice into climate policies and actions for a more equitable and sustainable tourism future.
